Dawn,

Thanks so much for taking the time to put your thoughts down. I will print as much of this as I can. I'm thinking of running all of it, at least online. Harry is off this week, so I've been dealing with another biologist at the commission. I'm so sorry about your daughter. I will probably have an article over the weekend of early next week. I'll email you a link when it runs. Thanks again, and all the best.

David

Hi David,
My office is being renovated due to some flooding so the noise level is unbearable. I have copied Annmarie's father, my ex, on this communication as well.
Here are my thoughts for your story. I am a bereaved mother, not a biologist. Take what you will. :
"Nothing can bring my daughter back, but I believe Florida government agencies have a responsibility to protect visitors to their state as well as residents from alligator attacks. This government report, while well meaning, does little to do the actual education, and presentation of facts to the public regarding the growing alligator population in the state. It calls for a needs assessment report to study the matter in both the education and public safety sections. How about some action?"

"What would that action look like? How about UTube videos posted online and shared regarding the alligator population, the consequences of feeding your ham sandwich in the state park to the alligator, the need for international visitors to understand the risks associated with alligators in wooded areas, etc...How about all police departments and 911 dispatchers being educated on what to do when they take a call about an alligator emergency. How about that proposed hotline being printed in every phone bill every month. How about reports to Florida newspapers quarterly on the alligator count statewide, and by county, injuries, and information on how to handle alligator sighting, bites, etc....?"

"Some of the information in this report is written with no semblance to reality. Yes, the report says homeowners shall have more leeway in killing these animals that have no natural predators except man. This is a step in the right direction, given the growth of the alligator population."
"But, shall you go outside and measure if the alligator is really 4 feet or less before killing it on your property? Is the govt. going to provide the tape measure, not to mention medical care? Most people can't kill a mouse successfully, much less an alligator."

"I think this report is a beginning, and the wheels of government move slowly, but it is a beginning. The Fish & Game Commission in Florida need to get the alligator classified as "game," not an animal of concern or even close to an endangered species. The facts of the continued drought may mean more people will be injured this year or die as the wheels of government decide how to protect Florida tourism, forgetting that citizens come first.
There is a complacency about the growing alligator population that needs to change."

Thanks a lot Dawn. I'm including links to the press release and the summary of the proposals. In the summary, the proposals involving public safety/education are on pages 14 and 17. I'd like to ask your opinion of the education and safety proposals, whether you think they're adequate or whether the commission should do more.

I have an interview scheduled at 10 that it's too late to change. Would 9:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. be ok? Otherwise I'm free any other time except 10.

Dear Ms. Yankeelov:

I'm a reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and I'm writing an article on the state's new alligator management proposals. I read your email to Harry Dutton from a few months ago with your suggestions, and I was wondering if you would have time to talk with me. I'm sorry to intrude on such a painful matter, and if you would rather not talk with me I certainly understand. But if you would have time, let me know and I can email you the state's proposals, which could be read in about ten minutes. Thanks for your time.
